Dryer vent cleaning for homes in Kalamazoo

Towels that need two cycles to dry, a laundry room that turns hot and humid, or a burning-lint smell all point to a dryer vent packed with lint or squeezed shut behind the machine.

Quick answer

Dryer vent cleaning removes lint from the duct between your dryer and the outdoor hood. A technician disconnects the dryer, runs a rotary brush through the full length of the vent, vacuums the debris, cleans the exterior flap and checks airflow. Most single-dryer homes take 45 minutes to 90 minutes, longer for roof terminations or very long runs.

Every load sends lint toward the outside. The screen in your dryer catches most of it, but fine fibers pass through and settle along the duct walls, especially at elbows, low spots and the exterior hood. Over months the opening narrows, airflow drops, the dryer runs hotter and longer, and the buildup becomes a real fire concern because lint is so flammable.

Our technicians clean the full run from the back of the dryer to the outside termination using rotary brushes and a vacuum, then measure airflow at the hood to confirm the vent is moving air properly. If the problem is the duct itself, such as a crushed foil hose or a run that is far too long, we can replace it with smooth rigid pipe on the same visit.

Signs you need dryer vent cleaning

Loads take more than one cycle

Restricted airflow traps moist air in the drum, so clothes stay damp even on a full heat setting.

Dryer or clothes feel very hot

If the top of the dryer or the clothes are much hotter than usual, heat is not leaving through the vent.

A burning or scorched smell

Lint touching the heating element or the hot duct can give off a scorched odor. Stop using the dryer until it is checked.

The outside flap barely opens

With the dryer running, the exterior hood flap should open wide. A weak flutter means the vent is restricted.

Lint around the outdoor hood

Fuzz collecting on siding, the ground or the hood itself shows lint is building up at the termination.

Hot, humid laundry room

Moist air leaking from a disconnected or damaged duct raises humidity and can leave condensation in the room.

How the vent gets cleaned from end to end

We start by pulling the dryer forward and disconnecting the transition duct. A flexible rod with a rotary brush head goes into the wall or floor duct and turns as it travels, scraping lint loose along the full length. A vacuum at the dryer end collects what comes back, and for long runs we work from the outside hood inward as well.

The exterior hood is cleaned and its flap or louvers are checked to make sure they open freely and close against wind and pests. We also vacuum the cavity behind the lint screen inside the dryer, where a surprising amount builds up. Before reconnecting, the technician measures airflow so we know the cleaning actually restored flow, not just moved lint around.

Duct materials and run length

The white vinyl hose and thin foil accordion duct sold in many stores are the worst choices for a dryer. Their ribs catch lint, they crush easily when the dryer is pushed back, and vinyl does not hold up to heat. Smooth rigid or semi-rigid metal duct moves air better, stands up to heat and is far easier to keep clean.

Length and turns matter too. Each elbow adds resistance, and many manufacturers limit the total equivalent length of a vent run. Homes where the laundry was moved to a second floor or the middle of the house often have long runs that clog quickly. We can reroute to a shorter path or recommend a booster fan when a shorter route is not possible.

  • Smooth rigid metal duct in walls, floors and ceilings
  • Short semi-rigid or aluminum transition behind the dryer
  • Foil tape at joints, not screws that snag lint
  • As few elbows as possible on the way outside
  • A hood with a working flap and no screen that traps lint

Winter and lake-effect concerns in Michigan

Cold weather adds its own problems. Warm, moist air leaving the dryer cools quickly in a vent that runs through an unheated garage, crawlspace or attic, and condensation can collect inside the duct. That moisture binds lint into a damp mat that clogs faster than dry lint does. Insulating those stretches of vent pipe helps keep the air warm until it exits.

Snow is the other issue. Low wall terminations on the lake-effect side of the region, from South Haven down through Benton Harbor, can get buried by drifts or ice up around the flap. A blocked hood can stop airflow completely. We check the termination height and recommend relocating a hood that keeps getting snowed under each winter. Keeping shrubs and stored items clear of the hood helps too.

Gas dryers and safety checks

A gas dryer burns natural gas or propane to heat the air, and the exhaust carries combustion byproducts outside along with the lint. A blocked or disconnected vent can push those gases back into the laundry area. During the visit, our technician checks the gas connector, shutoff valve and the vent connection at the back of the machine, and makes sure the flexible connector is not kinked.

If you have a gas dryer and a carbon monoxide alarm is chirping near the laundry room, or you are unsure the vent is fully connected, a carbon monoxide safety check is worth adding. We can also look at the gas supply line if the dryer was moved or newly added and the connection was never inspected by anyone with a leak detector.

Typical dryer vent cleaning costs in Kalamazoo

WorkTypical range
Standard dryer vent cleaning, wall termination$118 to $217
Long run or second-floor laundry$164 to $289
Roof termination cleaning$196 to $347
Replace transition duct with semi-rigid metal$54 to $126
Reroute or replace vent run with rigid duct$287 to $694

Dryer vent pricing in this region usually falls inside these bands. The final price is set once the technician sees the length, route and termination of your dryer vent. Compare more jobs in the furnace and AC price guide.

How a dryer vent cleaning visit works

  1. Call and describe the dryerLet us know how long loads take, where the laundry is and where the vent exits, and we set a visit.
  2. Disconnect and inspectThe technician pulls the dryer out, looks at the transition duct and checks the outdoor hood.
  3. Brush and vacuum the runA rotary brush cleans the full length of the vent while a vacuum collects the lint.
  4. Hood and dryer cavityThe exterior flap and the lint screen cavity inside the dryer are cleaned and checked.
  5. Airflow test and reconnectWe measure airflow, reconnect with proper duct material and run the dryer to confirm good exhaust.

FAQ

Dryer Vent Cleaning questions from Kalamazoo homeowners

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned in a busy household?

Many homes do well with a yearly cleaning, and large families running several loads a day may need it more often. Long runs, rooftop terminations and vents with many elbows clog faster. If loads start taking longer to dry, that is a good sign it is time, regardless of the calendar.

Can a dryer vent run up through the roof?

It can, but roof vents are harder to clean and more prone to lint buildup at the cap, since lint has to be pushed upward against gravity. Where possible, a side wall termination is easier to keep clear. If roof venting is the only option, regular cleaning becomes even more important.

Is it safe to vent an electric dryer into the basement?

Venting indoors puts lint and a lot of moisture into the house, which can cause condensation, mildew and dust problems in a Michigan basement. Gas dryers must always vent outside. We recommend running both types to an exterior hood with proper rigid duct.

Why does my dryer vent hood have frost on it in winter?

Warm, humid exhaust meets freezing air and the moisture condenses and freezes on the hood and flap. A little frost is normal. Heavy ice that holds the flap shut is not, since it can block airflow. Clearing it and checking for a sagging duct that collects water usually solves the problem.

Do you clean dryer vents in apartments or condos?

We can clean individual unit vents where the run belongs to that unit and we have access to both ends. Shared vertical vent chases in larger buildings are usually handled by the building owner. Call and describe the setup, and we will tell you whether it is something our technicians can reach.
